Established
in 1934 by upholsterer Eric Philpott, the family business has
been handed down through three generations and specialises in
a wide range of furnishings, including branded upholstery, dining
furniture, occasional pieces, beds, carpets, pictures, mirrors
and lighting.
Parts of the shop date back to the 16th Century. The Georgian
frontage was added to the front of the building in the early
19th Century. The building was owned at the time by a family
of Quakers called Lucas. The building was then their house,
and they ran a large brewery in the yard and buildings to the
side and behind the house.
Before Eric Philpott started buying the premise in Sun Street
as you see it today, he worked as an upholsterer for Crones,
in Bridge Street, (just around the corner), doing general re-upholstery
work, which in that day included re-stuffing mattresses. Thankfully
today, there is not much call for re-stuffing mattresses, we
do however still offer a full re-upholstery service which is
carried out by our own highly skilled and experienced staff.
Being a long established family business, we tend to do things
a little differently. Although we have a large selection of
furniture and carpets at our Sun Street showrooms, we are more
than happy to arrange a home visit to discuss your requirements.
(within a reasonable distance from Hitchin). We will be able
to bring out samples or brochures for you to browse in the comfort
of your own home, at no obligation whatsoever. We pride ourselves
in going that little bit further in providing you a good ‘Old
Fashioned’ service. |
